‘Cmon manufactures, stop teasing me with almost wagons...please give me a real wagon to own and love.

The 2017 Impreza is tantalizingly close to being a contender for a replacement of the NoxBox. Im not super keen on getting another sportwagen OR the good but bland CX5 but its still too small.
Useful Wagon
bloated hatchback
20.8 cubic feet cargo space in the Impreza vs 32.8 cubic feet in my sportwagen....and were already getting a little tight on space back there. you know what has the right amount of space and seats? The Cx5...which is why Mazda is cleaning up from dieselgate.
Not to mention the engine in the impreza are super blah, especially at my elevation.
So close.

17.5 cubic feet. Less than a Mazda 3 hatch.

I do love my 33.5 cubic feet (65.4 with the seats down)

Im seriously eyeing an LGT wagon of that generation.

Just waiting in line..

Owned that generation. Liked it but my wife wont do that. its too bad, the new one is just about right.

Seriously though, you’ve hit on my big car issue. My car is going on nine years old and has over 175,000 miles, but there is absolutely nothing that has been built since that covers both my vehicular needs and wants anywhere near as well. Spending significant amounts of money keeping it healthy is a more appealing prospect than replacing it with a more modern substitute at the moment.

Thing that bugs me? The sedan is 182 inches long, the hatch is 176. 182 inches would be PERFECT as a 5 door.

Knowing your lifestyle (and because they were continued two years beyond the LGT) I’d say the OBXT may be the better fit. Though the LGT definitely looks better

My wife hates the outback, thoroughly and completely.

A4 wagon?
CX-9 instead of the 5?
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:45 |

You sound like me, I refused to go smaller and at that at the pricepoint it certainly narrows the field.
Rav4 - it is a bit bigger than the Cx5 but bleah...
Escape - The ecoboost and transmission were fine (drove the larger engine) but the interior and plastic turned me off.
Forrester - Almost the same cargo space as the JSW and while I didn’t hate the CVT outright the plastic and the infotainment turned it into a nope.
Hyundai/Kia - The Tuscon/Sorrento are too small and the Santa Fe sport was a oh look its a Korean Toyota, bleah.
Anywho, I’m packing the family for a Christmas roadtrip to Charlotte (7 hours or so) to visit the in-laws. I’ll let you know if I have any complaints.
1 rear facing, 1 front facing, and infant “stuff” and I’m supposed to bring back a 50" TV courtesy of my FIL upgrading his TV and giving me his old one.

I don’t want a cx5 because I don’t want a crossover so a CX9 would be out. A4 wagon is genuinely tempting because of the way Audi has come way up in the reliability scores...when did they stop making them?
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:46 |
|
Ah, LGT it is then
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:47 |

66.5 when the rear seats are folded

A wagon, you seek? It doesn’t get much more wagony than this.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:48 |

RAV4 hasn’t been interesting to me since the 3rd gen v6
Escape has the WORST throttle calibration of all time at high elevation (turbo lag then all in), plus all the stuff you said
Forester is on my list but not my wife’s
Hyundai/kia are a big nope to start.
The trouble with the CX5 is the lack of
power
manual trans
wagon
but somethings got to give. Im not turning mine in until the spring but im looking now.

The 9 is low which kind of disguises the whole CUV thing. I want to say Audi made the wagon up to 12 or 13. Then they retooled to the Allroad.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:49 |

Go for a used Outback, You can pick them up with a Manual transmission and a Turbo.....Trust me it’s more fun than my stage 3 sports wagon, and I’ve only had time to work on the rear suspension so far....the cargo space may be less by cubic feet but it has more sqft so things fit in better.

My dad is still driving his ‘05 Taurus wagon because no one makes a wagon in his price range anymore. Unless something changes, he’s gonna have to eventually replace it with a minivan or a crossover/SUV of some kind, which he hates the idea of. The man likes his low center of gravity combined with lots of cargo room.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:50 |

“Im not super keen on getting another sportwagen”
at 61000 miles, Im getting more and more impressions of expensive happenings coming due. Its still a consideration (especially the manual alltrac) but I’d really like to be done with the germans.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:51 |

it does though, since the outback is basically a midsized crossover at this point. we sat in one and it was immediately off the list.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:52 |

I’m seriously considering a new Impreza to replace the 09 Forester in ~2-3 years.
I could be swayed into a Levorg if that ever came over, but we all know how likely that is...
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:52 |

I had that generation FXT with the 5 speed and it was a blast. If i could find a decent wagon with low miles i would consider it. The EJ25 doesn’t get great mileage though, which is a bummer.

don’t we all.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:54 |

What about one of those then? Pricier than the VW but they are such slow sellers you can for sure get a good deal on one of those, specially on a T5 AWD
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:55 |

its on the list. Actually looking for V70's and XC70's
![]() 12/21/2016 at 14:57 |

With a new up pipe, and down pipe , you can easily get 4-5mpgs better than stock......if you can stay off the go pedal.....that said my OBXT get about 16mpgs around town...I got lucky and found an OBXT with under 70k miles....if you look they are out there.

The CX5 is all new for 2017 and per the product specialist I worked with they should start showing up in March.

yeah, but its not much different.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 15:14 |

OK. It’s much more wagony than my WRX. What exactly typifies a wagon to you?
Personally, I think the “crossover” designation is a load of marketing BS meant to confuse consumers. To me, the Outback is a lifted wagon, whether you distinguish wagons from SUVs by proportion (height/length ratio), seating position (feet close or extended in front of you), or Torchinsky’s Rules of Wagonhood .
![]() 12/21/2016 at 15:15 |
|
My definition? we sat it in and it felt like a midsized crossover.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 15:21 |
|
Fair enough, did you drive the 2.0 or the 2.5? I drove the 2013 when I bought my JSW and it was only the 2.0, and that pushed my away from the CX5 at the time.
Sport mode does noticeably change the shift points but its not intended to be a long term thing as it resets back to normal when you turn the car off.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 15:22 |

Bruh.
Anyway, shame about the Forester. I ended up with mine basically because it was the closest thing to a wagon with a manual and AWD that I could get. I did consider the GSW (TSI) but I couldn’t get the dealer where I wanted. I also looked at hatches like the FoST, Juke, and Renegade, but they didn’t have enough space.

7 passengers CUV,
It’s what wagons crave!
A highlander is basically a modern wagon.
sorry wrong highlander.
look at all that space for landcruiser parts.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 15:22 |

Ack! But what does that mean ?!??!?
If we can’t clearly classify our cars, then all is lost!

Oh hey - here’s a diesel, AWD wagon that hasn’t been subject to a buyback! It’s really only missing a manual. And reliability. And being anywhere near you. But details.

I mean come on, it’s not as pretty as an 05 Legacy wagon, but it sure beats anything Subaru is giving US buyer right now.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 16:33 |

So many people complaining about the levorg (a name change would be required to sound like corp speak). The strange thing about Subaru is that they could grow crazy fast but they are intentionally taking a slow and steady approach. It would be easy for them to go nuts and give us everything we want, but they are afraid of growing pains.
![]() 12/21/2016 at 16:48 |

I’ve thought about it too. One of these days when all of my money isn’t going towards my kids I’d love to get a BMW/Audi either CPO or from Carmax with a warranty just to drive the heck out of for a few years. (So basically in 30 years when gas/diesel cars are outlawed and I’ll be too old to drive anyway.)
![]() 12/21/2016 at 16:53 |

Agreed. Here’s mine:
All my friends are asking for first car suggestions and I want to suggest a nice contemporary compact wagon to mine but we just don’t have any in America.
Although in Europe these are considered small family cars, they make excellent first cars in the US: not too fast or slow; relatively new, reliable, and safe; room for five; good luggage storage for things; and usable even past college and into the real world. Alas, there are only two to choose from: the V50 and your aforementioned Golf/Jetta estate.
Is the market really so small that no one can justify giving us a small estate nowadays? No Cruze estate based on the Astra K? No new Focus estate? No Sentra estate built on the Megane platform? No Auris estate? No Civic Tourer? Dammit America.
The thing about these mini longroofs also is that (at least in my opinion) their styling works so much better than on a standard hatch since there’s an extra foot or so to even out the proportions in an absolutely sophisticated and handsome way (well, then there’s the Civic...) Especially the new Peugeot 308 SW. Now there’s a company that’s returning to form.

I know it feels like a crossover to you, but a lowered outback seems to fit your bill best. Better than a “Full on” crossover like a rav4 or crv or whatever

well that generation is a wagon, its the current and last gens that are crossovers.

Yeah youre right...the new ones look like shit lowered. Still, possible used LGT wagon would be great. Rare though.

My wife’s 2016 Impreza hatch has proven rather handy at hauling a bunch of random crap in the back. It’s slow but the CVT does a good job helping it up on-ramps. The biggest letdown was the shitty OE tires which I have since replaced.
What about a Forester XT or Escape 2.0T?
